- LETTERS, Page 6Design for Civil Rights
-
- I was inspired by your article on architect Maya Lin and
- the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery (PROFILE, Nov. 6). The
- structure she has designed commemorating those who died in the
- struggle for equal rights seems to bear as much potential for
- contemplation by the living as did her Viet Nam memorial. I
- know, having touched the walls of the latter, the lingering and
- profound effect it has.

- I respect Lin's work, and I do not doubt her
- humanitarianism. However, there are able black artists who have
- survived the early days of the civil rights struggle and who are
- with us today, working quietly and steadily. The honor of
- creating this memorial should have been given to its people.
