  3.     I was inspired by your article on architect Maya Lin and
  4. the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery (PROFILE, Nov. 6). The
  5. structure she has designed commemorating those who died in the
  6. struggle for equal rights seems to bear as much potential for
  7. contemplation by the living as did her Viet Nam memorial. I
  8. know, having touched the walls of the latter, the lingering and
  9. profound effect it has.

  13.     I respect Lin's work, and I do not doubt her
  14. humanitarianism. However, there are able black artists who have
  15. survived the early days of the civil rights struggle and who are
  16. with us today, working quietly and steadily. The honor of
  17. creating this memorial should have been given to its people.
